Reel of Fortune & weapon skins

Every island has a Reel of Fortune slot machine that trades fish for skins. Where they are, what to feed, how Z/C switching works, and how Drip collection fits in.

TL;DR: only feed the Reel of Fortune your cheapest small fish. Never feed it Drip variants or boss trophies. Farm gold skins for the GOLD GOLD GOLD achievement, switch skins with Z / C, and share the look by dropping a painted weapon for a teammate.

1. Reel of Fortune: where the machines are

Every main island has a Reel of Fortune slot machine (the Lighthouse spawn area, Forest, Desert and beyond). Think of it as a casino where you trade fish for weapon skins:

  • Feed it: drag any non-trophy creature into the machine.
  • Payout: based on the value tier of what you fed β€” usually a weapon / equipment skin, occasionally a gold one.
  • Never feed: boss summons, quest items, or Drip variants β€” they are either required for progression or worth 3-10x sold directly.

Odds are not published. Community testing says cheaper fish give the best expected value: skin drops are tied to "did it pay out", not to what you fed.

2. What the machine pays out

The Reel of Fortune drops weapon / equipment skins (camos) for pistols, shotguns, SMGs, snipers and more:

  • Regular skins: cosmetic only, no stat changes.
  • Gold skins: the top-tier payout, and the trigger for the GOLD GOLD GOLD achievement β€” you need at least one gold drop.
  • Drip ties-in: skins share the same rarity system as Drip variants, and the machine can occasionally spit out a Drip fish worth 3-10x.

3. Switching skins: the Z / C keys

Skins are not auto-applied β€” you cycle them manually:

  • Keys: press Z or C while holding the weapon to cycle its unlocked skins (rebindable in settings).
  • Scope: a skin sticks to that specific weapon, not the whole class.
  • Sharing: drop the painted weapon on the ground and a teammate can pick it up β€” the only way to "transfer" a skin, since skins themselves cannot be traded.

Patch 1.0.5 fixed "slot machine skins disappearing at 4K"; if cycling does nothing, check you are on 1.0.5+.

4. Drip collection: the Tab codex and Fishipedia

Drip variants are the rare "flashy" creatures, part of the same collection system as skins:

  • Codex: press Tab to open the Fishipedia encyclopedia and see which creatures still need a Drip entry.
  • No special bait: Drip variants use the exact same rod and lure as their normal counterpart β€” pure farming, there is no "Drip lure".
  • Value: Drip sells for 3-10x the normal variant, but feeding one to the machine is a waste β€” sell it.
  • Achievement: completing Drip entries unlocks codex achievements (the "Drip" achievement wants specific variants like the Drippy Urchin).

5. What to feed the machine (and what not to)

ItemFeed it?Why
Cheap small fish (shrimp, mackerel)YesBest expected value for chasing gold skins
Mid-tier fishOKSame payout chance, no reason to use pricier bait
Drip variantsNoWorth 3-10x sold directly
Boss trophies (shell / skeleton / fin)NeverQuest items β€” feeding one bricks your progress
Endangered fish (Needlefish / Seahorse)NoNeeded for the Carrot bait trade

In co-op, agree on who feeds and who keeps the payout before you pull β€” skins bind to the payer, and "I fed it, you took the skin" arguments are common.

6. What v1.0.10 changed

The late-August v1.0.10 patch touched the skin economy:

  • Roulette fixes: repeated-skin and payout glitches reported by the community were addressed.
  • Item-position fixes: weapons placed on the ground (including painted ones) no longer clip or vanish as often.
  • 64 ground items persist: up to 64 dropped items now survive restarts β€” a painted weapon on the ground stays there, making skin-sharing reliable.
  • Water cleans cooked gear: you can wash the "charred" look off cooked tools, so skin display survives the grill.

7. FAQ (community reports)

  • "The machine keeps giving me the same skin": known pre-1.0.10 issue (Spider Crab Reel duplicates), retest after updating.
  • "Skin cycling does nothing": verify you are on 1.0.5+ (4K skin fix) and that Z/C are not rebound.
  • "Can skins be traded?": no β€” but dropping the weapon shares it, the only transfer route.
  • "What are the gold odds?": unpublished. Don't gamble rare fish on it; feed cheap fish and let it happen.
The slot machine turns unsellable small fish into display value. Skins change nothing about stats β€” but in co-op they make you look like the angler who knows what he is doing. And in this game, looking like that angler tends to be true. How to Fish Guide Hub
