TL;DR: collect 3 clams along the shore and feed them to Melvin β get seed money β buy a basic rod + knife β sell meat until you have $60+ β buy the Radar ($10) to unlock the next island β save up for the shotgun before sailing.
The Lighthouse is the tutorial island. The fish are cheap, the catch is slow, and the payouts are tiny. Walk the shoreline and pick up clams; three of them are enough to feed Melvin (the seated old NPC). He hands you a payout every time. It is pure free money, no rod required.
Anything you pick up can be eaten with Q to refill hunger and health, or stuffed in the bag to sell later. Resist the urge to cast the second you spawn β the first hour is a money game, not a fishing game.
Once Melvin pays out, spend it in this exact order. Do not skip steps:
Burn the first payout completely. Money does not earn money in this game β only upgrades do.
The Lighthouse boss sequence is fixed:
The Spider Crab has low HP and slow attacks β soloable. Before the fight, drop 3β4 small fish on the sand. When you are hurt, just pick one up and eat. The boss periodically stuns itself; when it does, slash 3β4 times and back off. Greed on damage is what kills new players.
Key point: the Spider Crab trophy is the shell, not the meat. Many new players sell the shell as ordinary meat, then cannot hand the quest in and are stuck on the island.
Before you board the boat, make sure you have:
Most new players dump cash into the boat engine. Don't. The community-tested order is:
If you missed the Lighthouse engine upgrade, the Forest engine upgrade is $230. The next tiers are $860 and a much pricier one on Rocks. Skipping the $860 tier and going straight to the top is a common speedrun choice.
Steam lists this as 1β4 player; later patches support 8. The game is fully soloable and every boss has a solo strategy. Co-op shines on boss fights and trash clearing, but introduces new failure modes:
Play the first island solo, understand the difference between meat and trophy, then bring friends.
The first-hour goal is not maximum income. It is leaving the Lighthouse with a working loop, a full bag, and a shotgun fund. How to Fish Guide Hub
Once you have read this, head to Fishing & hooking mechanics to lock in your cast timing, then Boss guide before the Forest.
