Bait & Lures: What to Use, Where to Get It

Bait and lures decide what you can hook. After the 8-20 world data reset, some fish habitats and lure preferences may have changed — confirm the exact mapping in the in-game Fishipedia.

🎣

Core logic: pick the right bait, then cast. Wrong bait/rod, or story progress not met, makes the water look "broken" with nothing biting — usually a state issue, not a bug.

Bait in three rough tiers

TypeUseTypical source
Common baitBase catches in rivers/lakesshop purchase, world spot pickups
Special lureTrigger for boss / rare fishquest reward, specific shop or progression unlock
Quest baitAdvancing NPC quest linesgranted along the quest line

Note: which bait each fish wants shifts with version and island, so we don't keep a stale static table here — rely on the in-game codex when it matters.

Getting and using bait

  • Check the fish pool first: use the Fish Guide to confirm what each island's waters hold before choosing bait;
  • Boss lures have triggers: bait alone isn't enough — positioning/stage must also be right; each boss page has a trigger checklist;
  • Don't sell quest fish as junk: tuna, carrot and others get mis-sold — see Quest Items & NPCs;
  • Re-confirm after the world reset: preferences shifted after 8-20, so old guide mappings may be off.

"Fish won't bite" triage

  • wrong bait/rod, or story progress not met → swap bait or advance the story;
  • boss lure equipped but no reaction → missing a special trigger or wrong positioning;
  • controller icon differs from memory → patch / Steam Input / remap changed it; check the current prompt in settings.
